Thermo-optical bistability in silicon micro-cantilevers

نویسندگان

چکیده

We report a thermo-optical bistability observed in silicon micro-cantilevers irradiated by laser beam with mW powers: reflectivity, transmissivity, absorption, and temperature can change factor of two between stable states for the same input power. The dependency absorption at origin results from interferences internal reflections cantilever thickness, acting as lossy Fabry-P\'erot cavity. A theoretical model describing coupling is presented. experimental obtained cantilevers vacuum different visible wavelengths are quantitative agreement predictions this model.

Optical bistability on a silicon chip.

We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, optical bistability on a highly integrated silicon device, using a 5-microm-radius ring resonator. The strong light-confinement nature of the resonator induces nonlinear optical response with low pump power. We show that the optical bistability allows all-optical functionalities, such as switching and memory with microsecond time response and...

Carrier-induced optical bistability in silicon ring resonators.

We demonstrate optical bistability in a micrometer-sized silicon ring resonator based on the free-carrier dispersion effect in silicon. We measure the transfer function of the resonator showing a hysteresis loop with an input optical power of less than 10 mW. The influence of the thermal optical effect, which is minimized in the experiment by use of nanosecond pulses, is evaluated theoretically...

Analytical study of optical bistability in silicon-waveguide resonators.

We present a theoretical model that describes accurately the nonlinear phenomenon of optical bistability in silicon-waveguide resonators but remains amenable to analytical results. Using this model, we derive a transcendental equation governing the intensity of a continuous wave transmitted through a Fabry-Perot resonator formed using a silicon-on-insulator waveguide. This equation reveals a du...

Analytical study of optical bistability in silicon ring resonators.

We analyze theoretically the nonlinear phenomenon of optical bistability inside a ring resonator formed with a silicon-waveguide nanowire and derive an exact parametric relation connecting the output intensity to the input intensity. Our input-output relation accounts for linear losses, the Kerr nonlinearity, two-photon absorption, free-carrier-induced absorption and dispersion, and thermo-opti...

Controlling thermo-optic response in microresonators using bimaterial cantilevers.

We demonstrate a novel platform to control the thermo-optic sensitivity in nanophotonic devices by evanescent coupling of light with bimaterial cantilevers. The cantilever can be designed to provide a negative thermal feedback to passively compensate for the positive thermo-optic effect in the waveguide core. We demonstrate athermal operation over 14 deg in cantilever coupled Silicon ring reson...
